Code & Standards

In Newfoundland and Labrador, social work practice is regulated by the following: 

• Social Workers Act (2010): Provincial legislation which regulates social work practice in Newfoundland and Labrador. 

• Canadian Association of Social Workers (CASW) (2024) Code of Ethics, Values and Guiding Principles: Sets forth the values and principles that guide professional social work practice. 
• Newfoundland and Labrador College of Social Workers (NLCSW) (2024) Standards of Practice for Social Workers in NL: Informed by the Code and Guidelines, this document outlines the practice requirements for social workers in NL to ensure safe, ethical and competent professional practice. 

Registered social workers must adhere to these documents and understand how they are applied to practice. This is affirmed as part of the application for registration and annually during renewal.
