Social Work in NL

In compliance with the Social Workers Act and Regulations, which have been established by the provincial government, NLCSW grants the Registered Social Worker (RSW) designation to applicants who meet the registration requirements. The Registered Social Worker (RSW) designation is required to use the title ‘social worker’ or to practice within the scope of the social work profession in this province. RSWs must adhere to a Code of Ethics  and Standards of Practice  as well as engage in ongoing continuing education.

As one of the largest health professions in Newfoundland and Labrador, RSWs work in a range of practice settings such as hospitals, seniors’ homes, community organizations, government departments, and private practice. RSWs can have many different job titles apart from ‘social worker’. Some examples include case manager, clinical program supervisor, community support worker, executive director, family support worker, mental health and addictions counsellor, and policy/program development specialist. The RSW designation, however, is a professional designation one holds regardless of job title. This designation is only granted through registration with the NLCSW.
